Magical beings are as diverse as the life we know on Earth. Because of that there's no exact way to categorize them in an entirety aside from the one common trait of being something that's on the opposite side of the magical boarder from humans.
Varieties: Between folklore and mythology, the varieties of creatures is limitless. All of the tales of supernatural and mythical beings can be traced back to an original source, real creatures that are just past the limits of a regular human's perception. The truth to the tales of them however are regularly bastardized, with 'retellings' of popular myth. Beyond that, there exist creatures that even mythology has forgotten about.
Belief does not equal power, and a lack of belief does not mean they cease to exist. Belief only determines how much of an ability they have to affect the non magical.
As a side note, animals with a sixth sense for these creatures are normal, as well the chance of children seeing the magical is very high since disbelief hasn’t been pounded into their heads.
Motivations: Much like humans, each magical entity has it's own motivations. With varying degrees of intelligence, some creatures are motivated purely by survival instinct, while others are possessed by goals and promises, or grudges and hate. Some simply want chaos and choose to attack humans when given a chance.

- chaos/law/good/evil grid (vs good/evil scale)
Most magical creatures are somewhat attached to their place of origin, leaving is not usually easy. Some of the more intelligent ones have their own 'cities' in which they live, that are protected by a magical barrier. In various cases however there may be annually migrating groups of creatures, or their own home has been destroyed by humans.
For those attached to their origins, those ties can be broken by contract, as new ties need to be formed to fit all the necessary requirements of the contract.
Note that Magical Creatures are not inherently good or evil and act based on their own personal goals and values, instincts, and so on.
Some animals we know of may be magical, but in low levels, or just all around understood to exist. Like cats, fuckign cats okay those def. have megical properties.
ON SHIFTING & PERCEPTION
really powerful shit can shift forms, but it takes a lot of magical energy to do that. if something greatly powerful(read this as very uncommon) it can shift whenever, but most weaker magical beings either cannot shift or need magical assistance (such as a magical battery). Often one needs to take a day off to shift, as it leaves the being exhausted.
For some species, shifting is easier, depending on biology. A more human creature would have an easier time of shifting to human, than an entirely inhuman creature would.
In some cases, creatures are too weak to shift, but are still adept enough at magic to make themselves appear as something else. Consider this similar to the perception filter that the barrier creates, but on a much smaller scale. Their form stays unchanged, yet they look as if they were something else.
