>Setting is current day. Location is probably somewhere in Germany
There is a thick barrier that blankets the Earth like an invisible fog. It alters the perception of people and divides everything into two different categories: Magical, and NonMagical.
When exactly the barrier went up is unclear, but it's effect has been a blessing for regular folk, as it means regular humans cannot interact or be interacted with by creatures obstructed by the barrier. This as a whole has protected people for a long time from the more malicious of magical beasts.
It is however not without weak points.
If one knows of the creatures beyond the barrier as more than just a fairytale, the barrier is all but useless to them. Even still with the perception filter, some creatures may slip through into sight, masked as other animals we know well. For example, a unicorn passing as a horse or a humanoid figure appearing as a regular or perhaps a bit peculiar human. Likewise, there are areas of the barrier that grow weak, as if the fog is dispersing. These areas become a dangerous place, if not for Hunters.
Hunters are a special group of people who take on the task of fighting back against the creatures that would otherwise rip apart the barrier and wreak havoc. Though they are not all as righteous as the job description suggests, and many have their own reasonings for what they do. Often, but not always, hunters will pair up and contract with a magical being to assist them in their work.
Contracts are not limited just to hunters, and details such as benefits and downsides depends on the reason of contracting itself, the relationship of who is contracting, and who is involved. For this reason there are many types of contracts with varying benefits and drawbacks.
