In this universe there is a level of logic to make it function along side our existing reality
Explaining regenerative use of magic: It's not poof healed, rather the magic is being infused with each cell to repair itself and multiply in the same way it would biologically, only the process is faster and drains the user's energy and body's materials according to how much energy it would naturally take to heal. All the magic is doing is speeding up the process of healing.
In cases of growing new parts or regenerating lost limbs, it's biologically rewriting parts of the body, expending even more magic than just healing a wound that would fix itself normally.
Explaining offensive magic: Most common magic is force magic, just expelling a strong amount of magic into the air to hit things with. It's easiest to grasp this type of offensive magic.
Other elemental magic examples: Magic is put into the air to speed up particles resulting in a hotspot. While the result isn't exactly a burning flame, it will ignite anything in the surrounding area that would be affected by high heat levels. The reverse can be done for ice magic.
Magic can also be used to fling items, or affect the world in other ways, though weight of an item and range of effect should be taken into account when casting as bigger areas of effect or heavier items will drain more magic faster.
Explanation on energy needed to use Magic:
How much magic you can cast depends on your physical self. As it takes energy to run and jump, it takes energy to affect your surroundings. Being fit and well rested allows you to use more magic, as well as contracting creatures with high magic affinity lets you share part of their power.
In most cases, one would train and work towards becoming more physically capable to become more magically capable, however some specific cases exist in which a being collects pure energy to store. In cases like these, the body of the being does not become any more physically capable, and the pure energy may start to destroy it in several ways.
Magical Artifacts/Items
In the past when humans and magical beings where closer and magic was more practiced, many times small villages would band together to perform a ritual using their combined power to enchant a item. Humans, being quite weak, did this as a way to protect themselves.
The magic item itself can run out of magic on a daily basis, it works much like a battery. However, when an item runs out of magic it only needs to rest to regain its store of power. This is because it passively collects magic from the air around it. This isn’t harmful to any creatures of the magic barrier because of its range and how little it takes from everything.
How long it takes to charge can depend on various things such as its overall max charge, how much magic is in the air, and occasionally other aspects. While charging the item remains as it would be before it was enchanted and must either be reawaken forcibly with magic or left to fully recharge.
There various reasons for enchanting items, and how they respond to the world is very dependent on this. Some are enchanted for protection, and take on a life of their own, while others are purely for extra power when casting. There are many variants of why and how an item is enchanted to act, so they can all vary greatly.
